FAQs

We understand that you will have many questions, and that choosing a care home for you or a loved one can sometimes be a difficult task. To help, we’ve compiled some of our frequently asked questions below. If you require more advice, please do get in touch with our team.

What is a care plan?

A care plan is a personalised document that outlines the specific needs, preferences, and goals of a resident. It’s created in partnership with the resident, their loved ones, and our care team to ensure that every aspect of care is tailored to the individual.

The care plan covers areas such as:

  • Daily routines and personal care
  • Medication and medical needs
  • Mobility and physical support
  • Nutrition and dietary preferences
  • Hobbies, interests, and emotional wellbeing

We develop care plans with input from GPs and community healthcare team to make sure we give appropriate care to all residents according to their needs.

At Oaklands, care plans are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect any changes in a resident’s health or circumstances, so that the support provided remains appropriate and promotes independence at all times.

What is person-centred care?

Person-centred care means putting the individual at the heart of everything we do. It’s about recognising each resident as a unique person with their own life story, preferences, values, and needs — and ensuring their care reflects that.

At Oaklands, this approach includes:

  • Listening to and respecting each resident’s choices
  • Supporting independence wherever possible
  • Tailoring routines, activities, and care to what matters most to the individual
  • Involving families and loved ones in care decisions

Person-centred care goes beyond meeting basic needs — it’s about creating meaningful relationships, promoting dignity, and helping residents feel truly at home.

What kind of activities happen in a care home?

Care homes like Oaklands offer a wide variety of activities designed to support physical health, mental stimulation, and social connection. These activities are tailored to residents’ interests and abilities, helping them stay engaged, independent, and fulfilled.

Typical activities include:

  • Gentle exercise classes such as chair yoga or movement to music
  • Arts and crafts, painting, and creative workshops
  • Games and quizzes to stimulate memory and encourage fun
  • Music sessions, live performances, and sing-alongs
  • Gardening, baking, and sensory activities
  • Themed events, seasonal celebrations, and day trips
  • Quiet time for reading, reflection, or one-to-one companionship

Our approach draws on evidence about what promotes physical and mental wellbeing, meaning that we emphasise the importance of being outside as much as possible, interacting with others and having fun.

At Oaklands, we also take the time to get to know what each resident enjoys, so we can offer meaningful experiences that bring joy and purpose to everyday life.

We encourage residents to introduce us to new skills and interests, that can then become part of the ongoing calendar.

How do visits work?

Visits are a vital part of life at Oaklands, and we actively encourage family and friends to stay connected with their loved ones.

You’re welcome to visit at any reasonable time – there are no strict visiting hours, and we aim to be as flexible as possible. Whether it’s a quick chat over a cup of tea or joining in for lunch or an activity, you’ll always be warmly welcomed.

We also offer:

  • Private spaces for more personal visits
  • Support for video or phone calls if you’re travelling or live further away
  • Opportunities to join in with special events, birthdays, and outings

If there are any temporary health precautions or special arrangements, we’ll always keep families informed and work together to find solutions that maintain both safety and connection

What is the admission process?

We understand that moving into a care home is a big step, and our aim is to make the process as smooth, respectful, and reassuring as possible.

Here’s how it typically works at Oaklands:

1. Initial Enquiry – Contact us for an informal chat or to ask any questions. We’re here to listen and help.

2. Visit and Tour – You’re welcome to come and look around, meet our team, and get a feel for the home.

3. Assessment of Needs – We’ll carry out a no-obligation care assessment, either in person or over the phone, to understand your needs and preferences.

4. Care Plan Development – If you choose to move in, we’ll work with you and your loved ones to create a personalised care plan.

5. Move-In Day – We’ll help you settle in, meet other residents, and make your new room feel like home from day one.

Throughout the process, we’re always available to answer questions and support families every step of the way.

How does an assessment work?

An assessment is simply our way of getting to know you better – your health needs, daily routines, likes, dislikes, and what matters most to you. It helps us ensure that Oaklands is the right fit and that we can provide the right level of care.

Here’s what to expect:

  • One of our experienced team members will have a friendly chat with you (and your family if you wish)
  • We’ll ask about your medical history, mobility, medication, dietary needs, and personal preferences
  • The assessment can take place in your home, hospital, or here at Oaklands — whatever is most comfortable
  • There’s no pressure or obligation – it’s simply about understanding your needs so we can support you properly if you choose to move in

All information shared is treated with the utmost confidentiality and respect.

Can I bring my own furniture?

We want every resident to feel at home from the moment they arrive, and bringing personal belongings is a big part of that.

Each room at Oaklands is fully furnished, but we encourage you to personalise the space to your taste. Our team is happy to help arrange things so that your safety is protected while your room feels just right — familiar, comfortable, and uniquely yours.

How much does care cost at Oaklands Rest Home and do you accept funding?

Prices vary depending on the residents’ level of needs. We accept both self-funded and local authority-funded residents. Please speak to our team for more information.

Can I bring my pet?

We know how important pets can be – they’re part of the family. At Oaklands, we do our best to support pet-friendly living wherever possible.

If you’d like to bring a small pet with you, we’ll consider it on a case-by-case basis, taking into account:

  • The type and temperament of the pet
  • Your care needs and ability to look after the pet
  • The comfort and safety of all residents

Even if bringing a pet full-time isn’t possible, we always welcome regular visits from well-behaved animals, and we often arrange for therapy pets or local animals to visit the home too – they bring joy to everyone.

Please speak to our team, and we’ll be happy to explore the options with you.

Can I book a trial period?

Yes, absolutely. We understand that moving into a care home is a big decision, and a trial stay can be a great way to see if Oaklands feels like the right fit for you.

Trial stays are flexible and can range from 7 days to several weeks. During this time, you’ll experience:

  • Our personalised care and support
  • Home-cooked meals and daily activities
  • Life as part of our warm, friendly community

It’s a chance to get to know our team, meet other residents, and settle in at your own pace — with no pressure or commitment. Many residents who join us permanently start with a trial stay.

Please get in touch to discuss availability and options.

Am I eligible for funding?

You might be – we’re here to help you understand your options.

Care home funding in the UK is means-tested, which means your eligibility depends on your income, savings, and assets. There are three main types of support:

1. Local Authority Funding – If your assets are below a certain threshold (currently £23,250 in England), you may be eligible for help with care home fees through your local council.

2. NHS Continuing Healthcare – If you have complex medical needs, you may qualify for fully funded care from the NHS.

3. Attendance Allowance – A non-means-tested benefit that can help with care costs, even if you’re paying privately.

At Oaklands, we know the funding process can feel overwhelming. Our team is happy to guide you through it or point you toward independent advice so you can make confident, informed decisions.

What is included in the weekly fee?

At Oaklands, we believe in providing high-quality care with no hidden surprises. Your weekly fee covers everything needed to support your wellbeing and comfort:

  • 24-hour personalised care and support
  • A private, fully furnished bedroom
  • All meals, snacks, and drinks – freshly prepared and tailored to dietary needs
  • Housekeeping, laundry, and linen services
  • Daily activities, entertainment, and outings
  • Use of all communal areas, including lounges and gardens
  • Regular reviews of your care plan

Some additional services, such as hairdressing, chiropody, or specialist therapies, may be available at an extra cost – but we’ll always be upfront about this.

If you have specific needs or preferences, we’re happy to discuss how we can tailor the support to suit you.

Can I expect any additional charges?

We’re always upfront about our fees, and we’ll explain any potential extras before you move in, so there are no surprises.

Your weekly fee covers the vast majority of daily living and care needs. However, there may be some additional charges for optional or personal services, such as:

  • Hairdressing or barber services
  • Chiropody or other visiting therapists
  • Personal toiletries or specific brand preferences
  • Private transport (e.g. to external appointments)
  • One-to-one companion sessions or specialised care beyond the usual provision

We’ll always discuss these in advance, and you’ll never be charged for anything without your agreement. Transparency and trust are central to how we operate at Oaklands.

What happens if I run out of funds?

If your financial situation changes and you’re concerned about running out of funds, we’ll support you every step of the way.

In most cases, if your savings fall below the local authority threshold (currently £23,250 in England), you may become eligible for funding support from your local council. This process involves a financial assessment, and we can help guide you or your family through it.

At Oaklands, we believe in continuity of care and will do everything we can to avoid unnecessary disruption. The earlier we’re aware of changes in your financial circumstances, the more options we can explore together.

You’re never alone in this — our team is here to offer guidance, liaise with funding bodies if needed, and ensure your wellbeing remains our top priority.

Is Oaklands suited to caring for people with dementia?

Yes — caring for people living with dementia is one of our core strengths at Oaklands.

We provide specialist, person-centred dementia care in a safe, supportive, and homely environment. Our team is trained to understand the unique needs of each individual and to respond with patience, compassion, and respect.

Here’s what sets our dementia care apart:

  • A calm, familiar setting designed to reduce confusion and anxiety
  • Staff trained in dementia awareness and communication techniques
  • Tailored routines and activities that promote memory, wellbeing, and confidence
  • Close collaboration with families to understand life history, preferences, and personality
  • Ongoing care plan reviews to adapt to changing needs

Whether someone is in the early stages of dementia or needs more advanced support, we’re here to provide compassionate care that upholds dignity, identity, and quality of life.

Do you cater for different dietary requirements?

Absolutely. At Oaklands, we understand that food is not just about nutrition — it’s also about enjoyment, identity, and wellbeing.

Our kitchen team works closely with residents, families, and healthcare professionals to accommodate a wide range of dietary needs, including:

  • Diabetic, low-sugar, or low-salt diets
  • Texture-modified meals for those with swallowing difficulties
  • Vegetarian, vegan, halal, or culturally specific options
  • Allergy-aware and gluten-free meals
  • Personal preferences and favourite comfort foods

Meals are freshly prepared on-site each day, and we regularly update our menus based on resident feedback. Everyone is supported to enjoy food in a way that’s safe, nutritious, and tailored to their tastes.

Can I go out with friends and family?

Yes — your freedom and independence matter. At Oaklands, residents are absolutely welcome to go out with friends or family, whether it’s for a meal, a walk, a special event, or even an overnight stay.

We just ask that you:

  • Let a team member know when you’re heading out and when you expect to return
  • Take any necessary medications or equipment with you
  • Let us know if you need any support arranging transport or mobility aids

Our goal is to support you in living life as fully and freely as possible — and that includes spending quality time with the people you love, outside the home as well as in it.

Do you have a hairdresser?

Yes, we do! At Oaklands, we have a regular visiting hairdresser who offers a full range of services — from trims and sets to colouring and styling — all from the comfort of our in-house salon area.

Appointments can be booked at your convenience, and our team is happy to help arrange them. Many residents enjoy their regular visits as part of their routine — it’s a great way to relax, feel pampered, and enjoy a little social time too.

There is a small additional charge for hairdressing services, which we’ll always explain clearly in advance.

Do health professionals like dentists, GPs and opticians visit regularly?

Yes — we work closely with a range of visiting health professionals to ensure residents receive regular, high-quality care without the stress of travelling.

This includes:

  • Local GPs who visit routinely and are available when needed
  • Opticians who provide eye tests and support with glasses
  • Dentists and dental hygienists who can visit for check-ups and oral care advice
  • Chiropodists, physiotherapists, and other specialists as required

We also support residents in attending external appointments if necessary, and our care team helps coordinate all medical needs to ensure continuity of care.

Your health and wellbeing are our top priority, and we’re committed to making access to healthcare as easy and comfortable as possible.
