Toddlertastic music and movement session

Posted on 27 June 2024

Our residents loved welcoming Tafflyn and her toddler group, Jiggy Wrigglers, to Oaklands for an upbeat music and movement session. In fact, it was so good, we’re making it a regular activity!

The atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy, as our residents and the lovely toddlers enjoyed a fun session together.

Benefits of Intergenerational sessions

Intergenerational activities are well-documented to have great benefits for both younger children and older residents, with critically-acclaimed TV documentaries, such as the BAFTA nominated, Channel 4 documentary, ‘Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds’ shining a light on why bridging the generational gap, to come together for shared experiences is so valuable.

Here’s why we leapt at the chance to start these inclusive sessions:

Builds social skills

Interacting with other generations is great for companionship and sharing skills. Our residents loved interacting with the children. Tafflyn’s Jiggy Vintage sessions brought great joy and a sense of purpose for our residents. The toddlers had a fantastic time too, gaining valuable social skills, and learning from the wisdom shared by our older generation.

Strengthens physical ability

The engaging Jiggy Vintage sessions are lots of fun and bring a great physical element. For older adults, this can help to maintain mobility and physical health, while for the children, it contributes to their overall physical development.

Cognitive stimulation

Music is a key part of the Jiggy Vintage sessions, which not only brings joy, but also incredible cognitive stimulation. This is vital for our senior residents and contributes wonderfully to the children’s development.

Builds community

Intergenerational sessions are the perfect way to create meaningful connections, bridging the generational gap, whilst building a strong sense of community and promoting mutual understanding and respect.

Boosts wellbeing

Our residents were delighted to interact with the energetic toddlers, and for many, it was great reminiscence therapy, bringing back fond memories of time spent with their own young children.

Ultimately, it is wonderful to see the joy and happiness the session brought to everyone involved.

After the successful Jiggy Wrigglers session, Oaklands’ Registered Manager, Nicola said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Tafflyn for leading such an inspiring session. It was such a hit, we’re already planning the next session! We look forward to welcoming Tafflyn and the wonderful toddlers again soon!”
