Oaklands Rest Home transform night-time care with Ally acoustic monitoring system

Posted on 27 February 2023

Our residents’ well-being is always our top priority, so when we heard about a revolutionary new night-time monitoring system called Ally, we couldn’t wait to give it a go!

Earlier this year, in partnership with our local Integrated Care System, we adopted Ally and we’re already seeing the benefits!

What is Ally?

Ally is a sophisticated wireless system which uses a microphone in each room to monitor noise during the night.

How does it help?

Alerts staff early to possible problems

Ally has an impressive ability to use machine learning to identify sounds which are unusual for each individual. Over 28 days it learns what is expected in a typical night for each individual and is able to raise the alarm if it hears anything out of the ordinary.

Staff can react quickly

Staff can provide quick assistance if the alarm goes off and prioritise their time to go more quickly to the residents who need them.

A better night’s sleep for our residents

Traditionally, care homes monitor the wellbeing of residents during the night by sending a member of staff into every room to physically check on each person. Dementia sufferers, or those who are frail and at risk of falling out of bed, often have hourly checks. With Ally, physical checks aren’t necessary and our residents can all have a good night’s sleep, which is important for maintaining health and wellbeing!

Reduces the risk of falls

It’s been well documented that physically checking and rousing residents can lead them to be disoriented and begin mobilising, increasing the likelihood of a fall. It is fantastic that by using Ally this doesn’t happen.

Contain outbreaks

One of the biggest advantages we’ve discovered from using Ally, was it alerted the management team to a potential infection in the home. Ally detected one resident was coughing during the night, not only did this enable staff to go to her quickly to provide comfort and relieve her symptoms with drinks and simple medication, but first thing in the morning we prioritised a test for Covid, which detected the case quickly. Although a positive result is never good news, the technology helped contain a potential outbreak. Thankfully, only a small number of residents were affected and they all recovered well.

We are delighted that Ally has made a massive difference to our residents’ wellbeing and will offer full peace of mind to our families.
