Oaklands features on latest Care Management Matters Podcast

Posted on 23 October 2023

We are thrilled that Robin Hall, Oaklands’ Accounts and Admin Support, who also works with Hampshire Care Association, recently featured in a special episode of Care Management Matters Off the Page podcast on ‘Best Practice in Supporting People with Dementia’.

Robin is an expert in the care industry and we are privileged she is part of our Oaklands’ family. Robin was joined by fellow guest speakers: Eddie Coombes (Chief Executive of Optima Healthcare Group), Dr Richard Ward (Senior Lecturer in Dementia Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences) and Amanda Gardiner (Care Home Owner).

During the podcast, the knowledgeable speakers discuss key issues around dementia care, with Robin focusing on:

Collaboration and individual care

In the podcast, Robin talks about the importance of collaborative working and preserving what social care does really well, care that is centred around the individual and what is right for them. This echoes Oaklands’ ethos of person-centred care being at the heart of our approach.

The importance of music

Robin continues to say how music is really important in supporting people with dementia. As research shows that music uses a different part of our brain, when speech can be a problem for some dementia residents, they can still access music.

She notes, music is a very powerful tool to calm somebody down or bring them out of themselves a bit. Some residents may be reluctant to participate in anything, but will still sing along to a Christmas carol. Robin fondly remembers her experience with a resident who used to be a Brownie Guide leader. Robin went away and learnt some campfire songs – the resident could remember them all! She would sing along and it brought her so much joy.

At Oaklands, we use music a lot as reminiscence therapy, as hearing familiar tunes can bring back lovely memories. We also use music to encourage movement, with innovative chair exercises and dance activities, which has many health benefits for our residents.
