Oaklands embraces the latest care technology by Orion Health

Posted on 18 November 2022

We were delighted to be chosen, alongside Woodley Grange Care Home, to be filmed by NHS Digital to share our experience of using the Orion Health shared care record, which we call ‘Care and Health Information Exchange’ (or CHIE).

We were joined by the film crew on 20th July and the spotlight was shone on our excellent practices at Oaklands, as our residents and staff starred in the film.

Take a look at the video below to find out more about CHIE and the benefits:

What is CHIE?

CHIE is a shared care record that conveniently brings patient information from different care settings into one place, making it accessible to all the clinicians and caregivers involved in their care.

CHIE went live across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight last year, here are some of the ways we’ve benefitted already:

Up to date information

CHIE has meant that we have immediate access to our resident’s medical history, we can see their latest test results, the medication they are taking and any changes to their prescriptions, upcoming appointments and other useful information – all available at the click of a button!

Takes pressure off residents’ families

Our residents’ families are already noticing the benefits, as they no longer feel the pressure to remember and relay all the details and changes to their family’s medical history to the staff. It is all logged and readily accessible on the system.

Saves time

In the past, our staff have spent a lot of time chasing information from GPs, hospitals and community providers, we are now thrilled to be able to spend quality time with our residents instead.

Better care

CHIE enables better care coordination across care settings, it enables faster and smoother transfers of care, avoids duplicate testing, improves medication safety and prevents patients having to repeat information to every new person they see. The efficient system is particularly beneficial if a patient suffers from memory loss, or has difficulty communicating.

Our Senior Carer, Mia Williams, has found CHIE especially useful if a resident is coming from home, where there is obviously no discharge summary. It means we have access to their medical details, immediately knowing whether they are diabetic, have any allergies etc. making it much easier to write care plans, incorporate diet and lifestyle changes and monitor medication. So we can provide the best possible care, from the moment residents enter our home.

CHIE uses multi-factor authentication to ensure the ultimate data security. A passcode is sent to verify the user’s identity, in the same way that online banking does, so all information remains confidential and secure.
