Making Memories: What our residents got up to in May

Posted on 17 June 2022

We love a themed day at Oaklands and this month was no exception! As the residents enjoyed celebrating Star Wars Day, National Cocktail Day, National Sing Out Day, World Turtle Day and many more!

We also pulled out all the stops to commemorate VE Day, which was a very special event and a great opportunity for our residents to share their experiences.

Here are some of our lovely residents’ highlights this month:

Birthday Celebrations

May was a special month for two of our residents, in particular, as Barry celebrated his 78th birthday and Jean celebrated her 96th birthday. The team made sure they were truly spoiled and our talented chefs made lovely cakes for us all to enjoy.

VE Day

It was great to commemorate VE (Victory in Europe) Day with our residents, we held a street party to remember the good times, those who were sadly lost and the victory that was achieved!

The residents enjoyed colouring in different medals in preparation for VE Day and, on the day, we listened to wartime music and our incredible chef did us proud with a delicious barbecue, as well as different salads and desserts.

Oaklands Air

One of our residents’ all time favourite activities is to take an ‘aeroplane trip’ on Oaklands Air. On this trip, we visited Australia for the first time!

We ate amazing food prepared by our wonderful chef, listened to Australian music and the residents even got to sit behind the wheel of their very own decorated Australian jeep! We are so grateful to our staff for making such a huge effort to provide a realistic experience.

Animal Therapy

At Oaklands, we pride ourselves on providing person-centred care and our lovely resident Clive was in his element spending time in the garden chatting to the birds.

Animal therapy is really important, so we always encourage our residents to interact with all kinds of animals!

Star Wars Day

We couldn’t let May the Fourth pass by without saying ‘may the fourth be with you’ and putting on some special activities for the residents. The residents enjoyed a musical day, playing different instruments and having a good old sing song! We created lovely mementos of the day with a Star Wars themed photoshoot including special props and themed backgrounds.

Interactive games

Another favourite at Oaklands, is playing games using our interactive screen, which is a great way to keep our brains active. This month’s activities included doing a quiz, playing Hangman and a sensory game.

The big sensory screen is very engaging and provides great stimulation. Clive enjoyed plane spotting and resident Margaret enjoyed watching fireworks, especially the colours and sounds they make.

Keeping active

We always make sure our residents are doing some gentle exercise and keeping active, to improve fitness and strengthen their core muscles for balance. So we’ve had a busy month with fun ways to keep our bodies moving, as our residents have enjoyed playing basketball, skittles, bean bag golf, darts and keepy uppys with a balloon.
