Making Memories: What our residents got up to in June

Posted on 14 July 2022

Wow, what a month of sunshine and celebrations! We kicked off by celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee in style and then joined in with top sporting events.

This month we held a raffle and raised £75, which we’ll put towards the residents’ garden or a residents’ outing. We also raised an impressive £140 for Alzheimer’s society, a charity close to our hearts, with our fantastic baking competition. The cakes looked and tasted amazing! Chef Katie Cotter’s unicorn cake won the best looking category and care home manager Nicola Ray won the best taste award for her chocolate brownies.

Here’s some of our residents’ highlights this month:

Jubilee party

We are so pleased that the first party which families, friends and neighbours were able to attend was outstanding!

It was fantastic to all come together for our Jubilee party and share delicious food. It made us so happy to hear all the positive feedback from residents and their families.

Royal Ascot

We had great fun joining in with Royal Ascot. All of the residents picked a horse and cheered them on, as we watched the races to see who won. We had some amazing food and played some themed racing games, rolling a dice to move along the board.

For Ladies’ Day, the ladies were treated to a pamper session and got dressed up wearing fascinators.

It wouldn’t be Wimbledon without strawberries and cream! The residents tucked into the delicious treat and we all came together to play balloon tennis.

Carers week

We had a blast making ‘Thank you’ gifts, including painted and coloured butterflies and lip balms, for all the staff at Oaklands to celebrate Carers Week! We finished by keeping active and enjoying a few games of ‘Keepy Uppys’ with a balloon!

National chocolate ice cream day

We treated ourselves to an ice cream of our choice with different toppings and flavours to pick from! It was delicious!

World Ocean Day

We had a fun-filled day celebrating World Ocean Day with arts and crafts, making button art and an underwater scene by gluing different shapes together to create underwater creatures.

Enjoying the sunshine

We’ve been making the most of the sunshine – and our new garden tables – by heading outside whenever we can. Residents have enjoyed reading newspapers, playing animal bingo (a favourite at Oaklands) and being pampered with a hand massage and having their nails done. The residents and staff also joined together to have a delicious picnic outside.

Gentlemen’s club

The gents enjoyed getting together last month, to play darts and dominoes, as well as feast on some tasty snacks.

Keeping active

The residents have enjoyed keeping active, with armchair exercises and parachute games. Whilst playing ‘Floor Dominoes’ and aqua painting, our wonderful residents, Garrett and Mark, mesmerised us with their interesting storytelling of their time in Singapore! They talked about their amazing memories and helped us learn a lot about Singapore.

Getting creative

We’ve started creating our very own fairy garden. Our residents have been busy colouring in their fairies and making small furniture. It looks fantastic!

We enjoyed a lovely singalong before tucking into a delicious meal from Oaklands’ fish and chip ‘shop’. We all cooled off with some ice cream to celebrate the wonderful weather and the memories of sitting on the beach!

Lastly, we’d like to congratulate Donna, for becoming our employee of the month. She’s cheerful, hardworking and always happy to help. Well done, Donna. It’s very well deserved!
