Making Memories: What our residents got up to in JulyPosted on 8 August 2022
It’s been another fun packed month at Oaklands! Our residents have taken part in lots of special activities, including sharing memories, themed tea parties and enjoying their Father’s Day treat.
Here are some of our residents’ highlights this month:
Alice in Wonderland themed tea party
Always keen to make the most of the sunshine, we took the residents out into the garden to enjoy a wonderful Alice in Wonderland inspired afternoon tea. The residents had a great time with the themed props that were decorating the tables and garden, and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious cakes served with tea and coffee.
As a well-deserved treat, all our gentlemen had a visit from mobile barber, George, who gave them a nice fresh haircut and shave.
The chaps had a great time laughing and chatting with each other. It was fantastic to see how pleased they were with their new looks.
One of our residents remarked: “Thank you to the gent, the ladies will swoon me now!”
The men also enjoyed getting together for the Gentleman’s club and playing darts.
Wessex Heritage Trust box
The Wessex Heritage Trust box aims to engage, support and share memories with people living with dementia. We used the box to reminisce and one of our lovely residents, Mark, shared some fascinating photos of his life over in Singapore, where he lived and served!
National Teddy Bear‘s Picnic Day
The residents enjoyed a teddy bear-themed picnic lunch, made by our own manager, Nicola. We listened to music and were surrounded by beautiful decorations. Our residents and staff even had the chance to adopt their own teddy bear with an adoption certificate. We had a lovely day!
We also celebrated International Tiger Day by colouring and creating moving tigers in our garden!
We had a wonderful afternoon chocolate tasting with the residents. We had 6 different flavours of chocolate to try – and the winner was… Aero!
As the weather was so hot, we did some cold baking! We mixed up different ingredients and decorated Angel Delights to have them for lunch! George, who completed his 2 week work experience with us, helped our residents, while he listened to their life experiences and they shared their wisdom with him!
Our residents also enjoyed decorating (and eating!) the cupcakes George had made, topping them with delicious icing and sprinkles.
Keeping our residents active
At Oaklands, we like to keep our residents active, both physically and mentally. To help with this, we played a great game where residents had to throw bean bags onto letters laid out on the floor, then think of female names beginning with the letter they landed on. It was a great challenge and lots of fun!
We also played some fun sensory games, including ‘What’s in the box’, where residents had to guess items through touch and matching a feeling to a picture.
Malcolm then got all our residents moving with relaxing exercises. We listened to music and did slow and steady movements to help strengthen muscles and have better control of our bodies! Our amazing carer, Helen. also did some exercises with our lovely resident, Lorrie, to help her regain her mobility.
We also played a competitive target game of golf and Betty was our winner, scoring 250 points overall. Well done, Betty!
Oaklands’ fairy garden
The fairy garden that we started last month is now complete! Our residents enjoyed making their own fairies and expressing their own personalities through their colouring! What a work of art!
We celebrated Vishnu’s and Ina’s birthdays this month. We are really proud of everything Vishnu has achieved since she joined our team at Oaklands and Ina was made to feel extra special, having her hair done and receiving a lovely cake, cards and gifts from the Oaklands family!
If you would like to make a difference to our residents, we are currently looking for a Healthcare Assistant to join our fabulous team. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 02380 845759. We’d love to hear from you!
