Making Memories: What our residents got up to in December

Posted on 26 January 2023

We know how to celebrate Christmas at Oaklands! As you’d expect, December was full of festive activities and Christmas cheer!

Here are some of our residents’ highlights, as we ended 2022 on a high:

Santa visits Oaklands

Our residents were delighted when Santa paid us a visit and handed out some goodies. Everyone enjoyed a sweet treat in the run up to Christmas, as we began getting ready for the big day!

Christmas fire engine

We were very lucky to have a visit from the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine. The residents enjoyed listening to the music, whilst tucking into a mince pie with Santa and his amazing crew.

It was wonderful to have our neighbours and close friends join in with the Christmas festivities!

Christmas activities

We loved getting ready for Christmas, making Christmas-themed paper chains and playing Christmas-style skittles, ‘Knock the snowman down’ and a Christmas-themed Oomph quiz.

We also spent time making thoughtful gifts for our residents’ loved ones!

Christmas party

Our residents had great fun at our Christmas party. We all wore our party hats to enjoy a delicious Christmas lunch with Christmas-themed decorations.

Afterwards, our Administrator, Paige, and Senior Carer, Donna, dressed as reindeers so that the residents could throw snowballs at them. They ran around the room and hid behind objects to make it more challenging. We also played ‘Hook a reindeer’; all the staff and residents had a good laugh!

It was such a special day and our residents were very happy with all their lovely Christmas gifts.

Christmas baubles wish tree

One of the most memorable activities was when our residents got to fill the Oaklands’ Christmas baubles wish tree and wrote down what they would like for the New Year.

One of our ladies wants to go horse racing, another to meet an alpaca and others kindly wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Elf day

We got involved with ‘Elf Day’ to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Society, our residents played ‘Find the elf’ where they had to look for an elf under cups to win prizes!

We ended Elf Day with a choice between making Christmas elves or getting creative and making a gingerbread house. They all turned out beautifully and the gingerbread houses tasted delicious, with a Christmas hot chocolate and lots of toppings!

December was packed with birthdays! We got to wish our lovely residents Mo, Lorrie and Lesley a big Happy Birthday, as well as Tony from Maintenance. Our head Chef Katie made some delicious birthday cakes, including an amazing cat cake!

We also celebrated our last ‘Employee of the month’ of 2022, which went to our amazing administrator Paige, for all of her hard work throughout the year.

Thank yous

We’d like to thank a lovely local man who dropped in some gorgeous flowers who thought our residents might like them! They looked beautiful around the home.

We’d also like to thank the art students at Marchwood Junior School for thinking of our residents and sending them each a Christmas card! Our residents loved reading them and they’ve been hung up proudly for everyone to see.

And, of course, a massive thank you goes to all of our amazing staff, who make Oaklands such a special place to be, as well as to our residents’ families for all their support.
