From Agency to Leadership: Tendai’s Inspiring Journey at Oaklands

When Tendai first arrived at Oaklands as an agency worker, few could have predicted the incredible path that lay ahead. Today, we’re proud to have him as one of our Senior Health Care Assistants — a valued leader within our team whose story is as inspiring as it is heartwarming.

Starting as an Agency Worker

Tendai began working with us on an ad-hoc basis, stepping in when needed. With a background in care — having previously worked for his mother’s agency — he brought with him not only experience but an evident passion for people. From day one, his dedication, reliability and compassion stood out. He wasn’t just doing a job — he was delivering person-centred care with genuine warmth.

It didn’t take long for residents, families and staff to notice. Tendai quickly built trust with those in our care, including residents who previously expressed a preference for female carers. His gentle, respectful approach won everyone over. It was clear he had something special.

Becoming Part of the Oaklands Family

As opportunities arose, we knew we wanted Tendai to stay with us permanently. His commitment to the role, and his natural ability to connect with residents, made it an easy decision to offer him a full-time position. The care team respected him from the start, and his willingness to go above and beyond never faltered.

What stood out most was his unwavering focus on resident well-being. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and it was obvious that for Tendai, this was more than a job — it was a calling.

Stepping into Leadership

Once on board permanently, Tendai took the next step in his journey by enrolling in his Level 3 NVQ and stepping up as a Senior Health Care Assistant. His leadership qualities became even more apparent, and his calm, positive nature made him a perfect fit to become our Induction Champion, supporting new staff as they settled into life at Oaklands.

He’s the kind of person who leads by example — steady, encouraging, and always putting residents at the heart of everything he does. Though leaving his mum’s agency wasn’t an easy decision, Tendai knew it was the right one — bringing stability, growth, and the chance to flourish in a role he truly loves.
