The worldwide spread of coronavirus has impacted many lives and has posed a serious threat to the most vulnerable in society. As more cases were announced in the UK throughout March, it was clear to us that the threat of coronavirus was ever-increasing, and we needed to rapidly implement measures to protect the residents and staff at Oaklands.

Update: July 2020

Whilst we are still in the early days of easing lockdown, we think it is the appropriate time for safe visitations to take place. As I am sure you’re aware, most that of the people we support are over 70 and are living with health conditions that could potentially put them at increased risk of not only catching COVID-19 but having further health complications as a result.

With this in mind, we have been exploring different options to enable relatives or close friends to visit with their loved ones in ways that adhere to current Government guidance and protect both visitors, residents and staff.

Types of visits:

Garden visits

To begin with, we will be putting procedures in place to enable outdoor visits from 13th July 2020. Outdoor visits (eg. in gardens) and staying 2 metres (6 feet) away from the people you visit, reduce the risk of passing the virus on because it makes it very difficult for the virus particles to spread to your loved one.

To ensure your safety, a number of additional measures are required to be in place for these outdoor visits to take place safely. We recognise that many of these will be difficult for families who have not seen their loved one for some time, but we believe they are vital in protecting your loved ones.

To find out how to book your visit and what to expect when you arrive, view our guide below. For full details, download our Oaklands Covid Visitor Policy.

Virtual visits

Virtual visiting will continue to be available through various platforms including WhatsApp Video Call, Skype, FaceTime etc.  Virtual visits are not limited to the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue moving forward. Our staff will help facilitate the visit to ensure that residents can hear and see the caller and to have an enjoyable experience.

Update: March 2020

Our amazing team, in incredibly challenging circumstances, have been working hard to keep the home running smoothly, delivering the same high levels of care and ensuring our residents are shielded safely and sensitively.

To achieve this, we have implemented a series of new measures, which are outlined below.

Important changes

  • As you are already aware, we are not accepting any routine visits for residents besides those of vital medical importance. This is to safeguard residents and employees from anyone who may be carriers of the virus entering the home.
  • In addition to this, all external activities and local community visits have been cancelled.
  • Anyone who enters the home will have to wash their hands, have their temperature checked and answer our screening questions before entry is permitted.
  • The team at Oaklands have all had specific training on outbreak management and drills have been taking place to ensure we are prepared should an outbreak occur.
  • Our in-house activities team has been working hard to ensure the care home remains as comfortable and sociable as possible for residents and have been facilitating video calls between residents and their families.
  • Our newsletter schedule has been changed from monthly, to weekly. This is to help residents’ families stay updated and connected with what’s going on in the home.

Your ongoing support and co-operation are greatly appreciated during these difficult times.

You can rest assured that the Oaklands’ team are all committed to providing an outstanding level of care, whilst keeping our residents, visitors and staff as safe as possible. And as you would expect, we continue to take every reasonable precaution and follow the daily advice provided by the government, NHS and WHO.

If you have any questions about any of the measures we are taking, please do not hesitate to contact the Manager/Head of Care, or email
